Canberra for local delivery. Has Telegraphs Canberra date stamp. Report of a major incident - the Petrov Affair - in Australia's political history. |
Mrs Evdokia Petrov being escorted to the plane on 19 April.
Menzies then decided he could not allow a person to be forcibly removed from Australian soil and ordered ASIO to take Mrs Petrov from the plane while it was refuelling at Darwin. She then joined her husband Vladimir who had been granted political asylum on 3 April 1954 - but he had not yet informed his wife. The couple became Australian citixens in 1956. Vladamir (then called Sven Allyson) died in 1991 while Evdokia (then called Maria Anna Allyson) died in 2002. Source: Wikipedia. |
