The postcards

The staff in the Cable Office on the Cocos Islands had - ironically - limited opportunity to send personal messages. Most operators had contacts in far away places with which it was incredibly difficult to communicate. There was no Post Office on Cocos until 1933.

Hence the operators on Cocos would send telegraphic messages to the Perth Telegraph Office and the fellow operators there would transcribe the message on to a postcard and post it.

Three of these very rare cards are shown below.

The list of the known postcards is shown elsewhere. The earliest date recorded in 27 January 1902.

Postcard sent to Miss Young in Scotland by Will - the second of the six postcards/telegrams.

It is one of the 10 cards sent to three foreign destinations apart from Malta.

Postcard sent to Pfordten, Malta from unknown operator - simply signed
"Well. Love to all".

Perth machine cancellation of 4 September 1911 and arrival Malta and Sliema B.O. date stamps of 30 September 1911 plus postman's "6" handstamp.

The Perth operators used one of the 1d chalk-surfaced postcards.
